Adolescent Health
TRAIL is an intensive multi-component program at Kannapolis Middle School aimed at increasing student’s knowledge, skills, and confidence regarding sexual health and decision making. The TRAIL program uses the Socio-ecological model that influences change at multiple levels: individual, relationship, institutional, and community. This approach is based on research suggesting interventions are more likely to be successful and sustainable if components target multiple levels.
Individual
In-School Education: Making Proud Choices, an evidence-based approach to teen pregnancy, STD’s and HIV prevention, helping adolescent’s proud, responsible choices about their sexual behavior. The curriculum acknowledges abstinence is the most effective way to eliminate these risks. Abstinence may not be the path some young people choose, so the curriculum encourages the practice of safe sex and condom use. Safe Dates is a dating violence prevention program for male and female, middle/high school students. It raises students’ awareness of what constitutes healthy and unhealthy dating relationships, and dating abuse cause and consequences. Students are equipped with the skills to develop healthy dating relationships, including positive communication, anger management, and conflict resolution.
Positive Youth Development: Merit trips are for students who achieved academic success, leadership skills, excellent participation and behavior. Field trips consist of college campus tours, team building retreats, and youth empowerment.
Afterschool Programs: The Afterschool Arts Initiative aims to reduce the gap that teens are unsupervised between the end of the school day and when parental supervision arrives home. To prevent and reduce at-risk behaviors such as substance abuse, teen pregnancy and dropping out of school by providing a safe environment. To increase social skills through team building opportunities and forming positive bonds with peers, school and family through art activities.
Relationship
Parent Workshops: These workshops inform parents on the curricula, service learning and positive youth development activities their child receives in TRAIL. Parents are provided skills to positively communicate with their child about their sexual health. The workshops are held to improve parent involvement, student behavior and student engagement.
Parent/Student Newsletters: The newsletters inform parents on Making Proud Choices, service learning, and merit trips. Newsletters include student letters to parents and take home activities for students and parents to complete together.
Institutional
Social Norms Campaign: The social norms campaign focuses on teen issues and aims to educate on the difference of perceived and actual norms. Peers are high influencers when it comes to teens and decision making. The campaign is utilized to promote positive behavior and environment among youth and their peers.
Community
Service Learning Projects: Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. TRAIL classes create their own student led service learning project that impacts their school and community.
Summer Advantage Programs: The TRAIL Blazers Camp mission is “becoming future leaders, building leadership skills and enacting change”. The Camp provides students with leadership skills to help them in academic programs and extracurricular activities. Participants in the camp will learn to improve their self-esteem and gain self-efficacy skills to become agents of change in their community.
