What it is: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition
that is likely caused by biological factors which influence activity in
certain areas of the brain. Common symptoms include: poor attention to
detail, not listening, talking excessively, avoiding schoolwork, easily distracted,
difficulty waiting turn, difficulty
with organization, on the go - as if driven by motor, and poor impulse
control.
Dr. Valerie Sakach, a pediatrician with extensive experience in ADHD, is the physician for this program.
Statement of purpose:
The purpose of this clinic is to improve the child's mental, behavioral
and developmental health by providing evaluation, medication, and
behavioral therapy for ADHD and other behavioral disorders.
Who may receive this service: Any child
suspected of having or previously diagnosed with
ADHD or a related diagnosis, from age 3 to 21 years is eligible. Various health
plans are accepted as well as Medicaid/Medicare, NC Health Choice, BCBS of
NC, and self-pay.
How this program is carried out:
Parents are encouraged to talk with their child's primary care provider,
school, or child care center to begin the referral process. Appointment is necessary. For
further information, contact Elizabeth Maldonado, Clinic Coordinator, at
704-920-1228.
How the
community benefits: Children and caregivers are better able to manage a
child's behavior which results in overall success. ADHD usually continues
throughout a person's lifetime and impacts educational achievement,
family, and social relationships. The team effort among parents,
physician, child care or school staff and others involved in the child's
daily life is critical to the success of the treatment. |
