WHAT IT IS:
Day Care
Nursing is a specialty branch of professional nursing, which
provides
technical assistance in the areas of health and safety to licensed child
care providers. This program is primarily funded by the North Carolina
Partnership for Children (Smart Start) and provides nursing services, as
well as hearing and vision screening to young children. The early
detection and referral of health and/or developmental problems in
pre-school children can contribute to easier transition for children from
child care to kindergarten, and to their academic and social achievements.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:
To promote healthy growth and
development of children in Cabarrus County; to promote safe,
healthy and developmentally appropriate environments for young children;
to provide child care staff, parents, and others who work with young
children the support and training they need to effectively provide and
care for young children; to increase immunization rates and preventive
health services for young children in Cabarrus County; to promote and
facilitate easy access to early intervention programs and services; to
promote and support the successful transition of children from the child
care setting to school.
WHO MAY RECEIVE THIS SERVICE:
Smart Start stipulates that
these services will be offered to child care centers and homes
licensed by the North Carolina Division of Child Development. Children ages birth to five years, their parents, and child care staff of
these facilities will be offered educational services, and referrals to
local resources for health problems.
HOW
THIS PROGRAM IS CARRIED OUT:
Two
registered nurses who are trained as Child Care Health Consultants
are assigned to visit licensed child care centers and homes in Cabarrus
County. The RN’s utilize community resources to provide specialized
consultation in the areas of immunization, mental health, developmental
disabilities, nutrition, safety, and in the prevention of communicable
disease. The nurses and the hearing and vision screener are employees of
the Cabarrus Health Alliance. The Day Care Program staff is available by
phone and/or on-site visits to address health and safety issues. |
