WHAT IT IS: School nursing is a
specialty branch of professional nursing

which seeks to prevent or
identify student health or health-related problems. School nursing
contributes directly to the student's education, as well as to the health
of the family and the community
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: The health
status of a school-aged child has a direct influence upon his educational
accomplishments. One avenue for promoting a healthy student population is
to ensure that they have available to them a broad range of health
services. The provision of these services is a joint responsibility of the
parent, the school, and the community. Ultimately the success of the
school health program will depend upon the degree to which each student
learns to take responsibility for his own attitudes and behaviors, which
affect his individual health status.
WHO MAY RECEIVE THIS SERVICE: School
nursing delivers services to students in public schools in Cabarrus County
School System and Kannapolis City School System. Students from
pre-kindergarten to age 21 years old are served. Students, families and
the school community in regular education and in special education receive
school nursing services.
HOW THIS PROGRAM IS CARRIED OUT: A
registered nurse is assigned to each public school is Cabarrus County's
two school systems. This program is unique because Cabarrus County is the
only county in North Carolina to have developed a comprehensive school
nurse program for each public school using a public-private partnership
model. The nurses are employed by the county's public health agency, yet
have access to the rich resources at the local medical center.
