Birds with WNV are a great way to monitor virus activity within the community.  To report a dead bird please call the Cabarrus Health Alliance hotline @ 704-920-1940 or submit a report online.  The following birds are excellent  indicators  of WNV activity within the community.

These birds are used to detect viral patterns because of their high mortality rate with the virus and/or the accuracy of their identification.  Bird collection and submission for testing will begin June 1st.  Until that time, it is still IMPORTANT that dead birds still be reported.  A situation where there is a cluster of dead birds or the death of several key species of birds in a short time, will be regarded as a hotspot.  These hotspots will be treated as if the case were positive.

If the bird is not a species that will be collected or if it is prior to June 1st, please dispose of it in a plastic bag, tie it and place it in an outside garbage can after reporting it.  Use a shovel or tool to move the bird into the bag and then wash hands thoroughly with soap and water.

If you do not know what kind of bird it is, please use the links above to compare what you see to that of a blue jay, crow, cardinal or bird of prey.  If the bird does not look like any of these, please be descriptive when reporting and at least give the color and size of the bird. Δ
