In an effort to reduce the incidence of adolescent pregnancy and promote positive youth development, Cabarrus Health Alliance coordinates Smart Girls Know, an after school program for adolescent females attending selected middle schools within Kannapolis City Schools and Cabarrus County Schools districts.
Our program adopts a community-wide approach that targets students, parents, and school personnel and will incorporate three major components: Abstinence Education, Positive Youth Development, and Parent-Child Connectedness. Smart Girls Know seeks to increase the knowledge and skills needed to remain abstinent, improve the social norm towards an abstinence-positive perception, and increase parent-child connectedness as a protective factor against early sexual activity and other risky behaviors. In addition, physical activity is incorporated into the afterschool program as an opportunity to build a positive body image and peer support.
By the end of the 2-year grant, Smart Girls Knowwill provide intensive pregnancy prevention programming to approximately 210 – 315 adolescent females residing in Cabarrus County.
